Cyclone Fengal set to hit Tamil Nadu as IMD issues heavy rainfall alerts across coastal districts

TN News: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert as the depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal intensified into a deep depression and is expected to develop into Cyclone ‘Fengal’ by Wednesday, November 27. Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is forecast for several districts in Tamil Nadu, prompting school closures in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, and Mayiladuthurai. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) predicts widespread rainfall across the state, particularly in coastal regions, until Thursday, November 28.

Red and Yellow Alerts in Key Districts

Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai are under a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall on Wednesday. Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, and Kanchipuram have been placed on yellow and orange alerts through Saturday. Light to moderate rains with occasional heavy showers are expected across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. Coastal districts will see widespread rainfall, while interior regions are likely to experience scattered showers. On November 27, heavy to very heavy rain is expected in districts like Chennai, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and Cuddalore, with extremely heavy rain in isolated areas. Thunderstorms with lightning will accompany these rains in some locations. While on November 28, Coastal Tamil Nadu is predicted to see heavy rainfall, while interior regions may experience moderate showers. Chennai and neighboring districts like Chengalpattu, Villuppuram, and Tiruvallur are on alert for very heavy rains.

Government Mobilizes Resources for Preparedness

The government has deployed 17 teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and state agencies to vulnerable districts, including Chennai, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, and Thanjavur. Relief centers have been established, and essential equipment such as motor pumps and boats is on standby.

Chennai and adjoining districts have reported moderate rainfall, with heavy showers in isolated areas. Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin inspected flood-prone areas in Chennai and directed canal desilting and other maintenance work. State-run Aavin is ensuring uninterrupted milk supply, while first responders are ready to assist in emergencies.
