Leaders of 16 other opposition parties including Congress, Trinamool Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, Left parties, Raijor Dal, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) today met Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria and submitted a memorandum to the President. All parties requested the Governor that CAA should not be implemented in the state.

The opposition forum said, “We the opposition political parties and the people of Assam living here, all of us have been very clearly opposing this unconstitutional Citizenship Amendment Act since the first day of its introduction in the 2019 Parliament. Unfortunately, the ruling BJP government, taking advantage of its majority in both the Houses of Parliament, has passed the bill, ignoring the sentiments of the people of Assam.

After which the Union Home Minister has recently announced that CAA is going to be implemented. This law is going to endanger the history, culture and social environment here. The historic Assam Accord of 1985 provided textiles, economy and identity to the Assamese people. Therefore, we all opposition political parties urge you to intervene in this very sensitive matter."
