West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee criticizes Maha Kumbh management, calls it ‘Kumbh of death’
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee defends her remarks on the Maha Kumbh, asserting respect for all religions while emphasizing that festivals are meant for communal enjoyment amidst political backlash.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee faces backlash for calling Maha Kumbh a 'Mrityu Kumbh'. She asserts respect for all religions, emphasizing the inclusive nature of festivals.
Amidst the uproar, Banerjee affirmed her respect for all religions and cultures. "Who said I do not respect my Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati Maharaj to an individual, but festivals are for all," she stated, highlighting India's "unity in diversity". This came as a direct response to the controversy sparked by her earlier description of the Maha Kumbh as "Mrityu Kumbh".
'Mrityu Kumbh' Remark: A Critique of Management
Banerjee's initial comment was made during a session in the state assembly, where she criticized the Uttar Pradesh government's management of the Maha Kumbh at Prayagraj. She cited stampedes and alleged cover-ups of the death toll as reasons for her "Mrityu Kumbh" description. Her concerns extended to the disparity in arrangements, alleging preferential treatment for VIPs while the poor faced inadequate facilities.
Political and Religious Reactions: Condemnation and Defense
Banerjee's remarks drew sharp criticism from political and religious leaders. BJP leaders, including Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, demanded an apology, deeming her words insulting to Hindu religious sentiments. However, Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati Maharaj supported Banerjee's sentiment, pointing to mismanagement and sewage contamination at the event.
