Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi has empowered Corps Commanders along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China to address and resolve issues at their level, aiming to prevent misunderstandings that could escalate into violence. In a recent interview, General Dwivedi emphasized the importance of local commanders managing situations arising from differing perceptions along the LAC to maintain peace and stability.

Dialogue and coordination

He highlighted that since April 2020, certain areas have experienced differences in perception, occasionally leading to confrontations. To address these, both sides have engaged in disengagement processes, with agreements signed on October 21, 2024, facilitating resolution in pending areas. General Dwivedi noted that while progress has been made, some issues remain, necessitating continued dialogue and coordination.

India-China border Affairs

The Army Chief also mentioned the role of the Working Mechanism for Consultation & Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC) and the Special Representatives' meetings, which resumed in December after a hiatus since 2019-20. These platforms provide strategic guidance for resolving outstanding issues and enhancing mutual trust.

Infrastructure developments

Regarding infrastructure developments along the border, General Dwivedi observed that both India and China have enhanced their capabilities over time, leading to changes in terrain and logistics. He stressed that while both nations have made their positions more assertive and comfortable, ongoing communication and confidence-building measures are essential to prevent misunderstandings and maintain stability along the LAC.
