The unfortunate incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Friday, along the road from ABC Farm Chowk to Tadigutta Chowk in Koregaon Park. The victim, identified as Rauf Akbar Shaikh, was returning home on his scooter after completing his final delivery for the night. His life was cut short when an Audi collided with his vehicle, resulting in fatal injuries.

Sequence of events, CCTV footage surfaces

Prior to the collision with Shaikh’s scooter, the Audi had already struck another two-wheeler, causing three riders to fall and sustain minor injuries. According to police reports, the driver fled the scene without offering any assistance to the victims. However, law enforcement swiftly identified the driver, Ayush Pradeep Tayal, using CCTV footage and other evidence. He was apprehended later that morning at his residence in Hadapsar, Pune. Tayal is reportedly managing a family-owned business at the Ranjangaon industrial estate.

A senior police officer involved in the investigation stated, “The car and both scooters were traveling in the same direction. While attempting to overtake, the car first struck one scooter, causing the riders to fall. The driver did not stop but instead accelerated, hitting Shaikh’s scooter and running him over a few meters ahead.”

After the accident, Shaikh was immediately transported to a private hospital in Hadapsar, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. The Mundhwa police, led by Senior Inspector Neelkanth Jagtap, have filed charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against Tayal, along with additional charges related to rash driving and endangerment.
