New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the importance of global cooperation during his address to a special session of the Parliament of Guyana in Georgetown on Thursday. Reflecting on India’s unwavering commitment to assisting nations in crisis, he stated, “Whether it was Sri Lanka, Maldives, or any other country facing a crisis, India has always provided assistance without selfish motives.” Modi highlighted India’s proactive role in providing humanitarian aid, saying, “From Nepal to Türkiye to Syria, India has acted as the first responder in times of natural disasters.”

Promoting Unity Through Space and Oceans

The prime minister urged nations to see space and seas as areas of collaboration rather than conflict. “This is not the era of conflict. Humanity first guides India’s decision-making,” Modi said, reiterating India’s focus on fostering harmony and cooperation over expansionism. “We have never moved forward with selfishness or an expansionist vision nor harbored any feeling of seizing resources,” he added.

A Legacy of Democracy and Humanity

Modi underscored India’s and Guyana’s shared history of struggle against slavery and colonialism, emphasizing their role as global proponents of democracy. “In the last 200-250 years, both India and Guyana witnessed similar kinds of slavery and struggle,” he remarked. “Democracy is not just a system for us; it is in our DNA, vision, conduct, and behavior.” He described India’s philosophy as rooted in the principle of "democracy first, humanity first," portraying the country as a “Vishwa Bandhu” or universal friend.

Strengthening India-Guyana Relations

Drawing parallels between the two nations, Modi praised their joint efforts in strengthening global democracy. “Island nations are not small countries but large ocean countries,” he asserted, highlighting India’s inclusive approach. The address followed a momentous occasion where Modi was honored with Guyana’s highest national award, ‘The Order of Excellence.’
