West Bengal: The father of a trainee doctor, who was brutally raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9 last year, expressed dissatisfaction with the Central Bureau of Investigation's (CBI) handling of the case. Speaking to the media on Saturday, just hours before the Sealdah Civil and Criminal Court’s expected verdict, he voiced concerns about the lack of progress in the investigation.

"The CBI has done nothing in this matter. We have raised several questions before the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court," he said. Despite his frustration, he emphasized that the court would ultimately decide on appropriate punishment.

Family resolute in their fight for justice

The anguished father said that the family would continue knocking at the court's door and would fight for justice till the perpetrators are brought to book. "The DNA report shows the involvement of four boys and one girl. We will feel relief only when the accused are punished," he asserted.

The family has also written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, appealing for intervention. However, they have not received any response yet.

Background of the RG Kar rape-murder case

Nationwide outrage erupted due to the gang rape and subsequent murder of the hospital seminar room body of a trainee doctor. After the attack, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer at the hospital, was arrested. Finally, in November 2024, the CBI filed its chargesheet regarding financial irregularities at the same hospital. Most importantly, senior people like ex-principal Dr. Sandip Ghosh and other high-ranking authorities were involved and accused of this infamous case.

Apart from financial malpractices, Sandip Ghosh was also interrogated in connection with the murder case. The investigation was delayed, and some of the accused, including Ghosh and Abhijit Mondal, were granted bail.

Trial and lingering questions

The in-camera trial commenced on November 12. The prosecution produced 50 witnesses, while the hearing on Sanjay Roy was concluded on January 9. The victim's parents still do not accept more culprits and filed an application for further investigation.
