Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated Constitution Day on Tuesday by emphasizing the enduring relevance and transformative power of India’s Constitution. Speaking at an event organized by the Supreme Court, he described the Constitution as a "vibrant and constantly flowing stream" guiding the nation’s present and future.

PM Modi highlighted his government’s dedication to upholding the spirit of the Constitution through policies aimed at enhancing citizens' ease of living. He pointed to initiatives like the Digital Life Certificate for pensioners, which eliminates the need for senior citizens to physically visit banks to prove their existence. “Around 1.5 crore senior citizens have already benefited from this facility,” he noted.

The Prime Minister also referred to welfare measures such as the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, now extended to cover individuals above 70 years of age. He credited the Constitution for inspiring policies rooted in human values and Indian culture, symbolized by images of Lord Ram and Sita in its original manuscript.

Remembering Mumbai terror attack

Marking the anniversary of the 2008 Mumbai terror attack, PM Modi paid tribute to the victims and reaffirmed India’s resolve against terrorism. "Every terrorist organization challenging India’s security will receive a befitting reply," he said, reiterating the nation’s resilience.

Historic milestones and challenges

Reflecting on past challenges to the Constitution, PM Modi recalled the Emergency imposed during Indira Gandhi’s tenure and lauded the successful abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir. "Today, Baba Saheb’s Constitution is fully implemented in Jammu and Kashmir, a testament to its strength and resilience," he remarked.

Path for transformation

India, he said, is undergoing a "huge phase of transformation," with the Constitution serving as its guiding force. Quoting Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, he reminded the audience: “The Constitution is not a mere lawyer’s document. Its spirit is always the spirit of age.”

Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna presented PM Modi with a painting by a Tihar Jail inmate, and the Prime Minister released the Annual Report of Indian Judiciary 2023-24 during the ceremony.
