India is considering increasing its energy imports from the United States ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump on February 12-13, 2025. This development follows President Trump's recent declaration of a national energy emergency aimed at maximizing U.S. oil and gas production and boosting energy exports globally.

Fifth-largest supplier

Indian Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has indicated a strong possibility of enhanced energy trade between India and the U.S., stating, "More U.S. energy coming into the market is welcome."
India, which imports over 80% of its oil, has been diversifying its energy sources. The U.S. is currently India's fifth-largest supplier, accounting for over 4% of India's total oil imports in 2024.

 Middle Eastern sources

The potential increase in U.S. energy imports is also influenced by recent U.S. sanctions targeting Russian oil producers and associated entities, which have tightened the supply of Russian oil to India. Consequently, India is looking to traditional Middle Eastern sources and the U.S. to meet its energy demands. Additionally, India is reviewing import tariffs on over 30 items, including luxury cars, solar cells, and chemicals, potentially leading to increased imports from the U.S. This move aims to reduce average tariffs ahead of Prime Minister Modi's visit to the U.S.

 Strengthening strategic and economic partnership

The upcoming meeting between Prime Minister Modi and President Trump is expected to further discuss and potentially solidify these developments, reflecting the strengthening strategic and economic partnership between India and the United States
