Mumbai has reported its first case of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare neurological disorder where the body's immune system attacks the peripheral nerves, leading to muscle weakness and, in severe cases, paralysis. A 64-year-old woman from Andheri East has been diagnosed and is currently receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit of a civic-run hospital. Given the recent cases in Maharashtra, it's essential to understand how to protect oneself from potential GBS-related infections.

Five effective strategies

Practice Good Hygiene: Regular handwashing with soap and water is crucial, especially before eating or touching your face, and after using the restroom. This helps prevent infections that could trigger GBS.

Ensure Safe Food and Water Consumption: Consume well-cooked food and drink water from reliable sources. Avoid raw or undercooked poultry, as certain infections linked to GBS can be transmitted through contaminated food or water.

Stay Updated on Vaccinations: While there's no vaccine specifically for GBS, staying current with recommended vaccinations can prevent infections that might lead to GBS.

Seek Prompt Medical Attention for Infections: If you experience symptoms like persistent diarrhea, respiratory issues, or other signs of infection, consult a healthcare professional promptly. Early treatment can reduce the risk of complications associated with GBS.

Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle: Regular exercise, a balanced diet, adequate sleep, and stress management can strengthen your immune system, helping to prevent infections that could potentially trigger GBS.By adhering to these preventive measures, you can reduce the risk of infections associated with GBS. If you notice symptoms such as muscle weakness, tingling sensations, or difficulty with coordination, seek medical attention promptly.
