The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has started interrogating Tahawwur Rana, the key conspirator of the 2008 Mumbai terror strike. Rana, who has been extradited from the US, is being thoroughly questioned on plotting the 26/11 attacks, his connection with Lashkar-e-Taiba and suspected connections with the ISI. The NIA is investigating Rana's background and his involvement in the 26/11 attacks. Rana has been detained in NIA custody until April 29, and has been under high security to stop himself from being attacked.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) questioned Tahawwur Rana, the prime conspirator in the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, on Friday after his extradition from the US to India. He was since arrested. He will be quizzed by the intelligence agency for involvement in plotting the 26/11 attacks, his association with Pakistan's spy agency ISI and his association with terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba, sources said.
As per information received from sources, in addition to this, the NIA will also question Tahawwur Rana during the first round of questioning. Thereafter, he will be questioned regarding his involvement in the 26/11 attack. A diary will be made for interrogation and thereafter its disclosure statement will be recorded. While interrogating him, precaution will be taken so that he does not harm himself in any manner.
Mumbai attack, ISI link. Will face questioning
Rana, 64, came to Delhi on Thursday night by a special flight and was promptly arrested by the NIA. He was brought in a late-night hearing before a special court at Patiala House which extended his custody remand to the anti-terror agency until April 29.
A 12-member team of NIA officers headed by DIG Jaya Roy, who was instrumental in getting Tahawwur Rana extradited from the US, has been entrusted with questioning him. Throughout this period of custody, the NIA intends to question Rana at length, to determine the complete extent of that conspiracy.
Who was financing? Interrogation will tell
The officials will also inquire about who was financing Rana, his connection with the sleeper cell and his business partners. Who financially supported him? A 20-day remand was requested by the NIA and stated Rana's custodial interrogation was essential to unravel the entire extent of the conspiracy behind the synchronized attacks carried out by 10 Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives on November 26, 2008.The agency mentioned in its submission that it relied on cogent evidence such as email records, which spoke heavily in favor of its custody plea. The court, nevertheless, awarded him 18-day custody. It even asked Rana if he was willing to hire a lawyer or accept the legal aid assigned to him by the court.
Don't harm yourself, special care will be given
Rana has been lodged in a high-security lock-up at the NIA headquarters which is being monitored through CCTV cameras. Food and other provisions are being arranged in the 14×14 cell. Special precautions such as round-the-clock security guards have been taken to ensure that he does not harm himself to avoid questioning.
Once the custodial interrogation is complete, Rana will be accommodated in Delhi's Tihar jail, where security has been tightened in expectation of his visit.
