How to handle digital arrest scams? In his latest Mann Ki Baat address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued crucial guidance for citizens facing the alarming rise of “digital arrest” scams. He emphasized, “There is no system like digital arrest in our law. It’s pure fraud, a deceitful act by criminals who are enemies of society.” PM Modi’s advice was clear: recognize these scams, remain calm, and take prompt action.
PM Modi’s three-step approach: "Wait, Think, Act"
Highlighting the surge of cybercriminals impersonating law enforcement officials to extort money, PM Modi outlined a three-step strategy to tackle such threats. These criminals prey on public fear, warning of arrests unless a payment is made.
1. Wait – Stay calm and avoid any rushed response. Don’t share personal information, and if possible, capture a screenshot or record the call.
2. Think – Understand that legitimate agencies never threaten arrest or demand payments over phone calls or video calls. If a call sounds suspicious, it’s likely fraudulent.
3. Act – Report immediately by contacting the National Cyber Helpline at 1930, file a complaint on the cybercrime portal, inform family, and notify local authorities. Retain any evidence as a precaution.
Government’s anti-fraud measures
PM Modi reassured citizens that agencies are actively working to eliminate these scams. The National Cyber Coordination Centre collaborates with investigative bodies to strengthen defenses against cyber fraud and safeguard citizens.
