Uttarakhand: Uttarakhand is set to make history as the first state in independent India to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) on January 27, 2025. This significant legislative shift will take place just a day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled visit to Dehradun, highlighting the importance of this initiative.

Launching the UCC Portal

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami's secretary, Shailesh Bagoli, announced that the UCC portal will be launched at 12:30 PM on January 27 at the Secretariat. The UCC aims to create a common legal framework governing personal laws related to marriage, divorce, inheritance, and maintenance across various faiths and communities.

A Commitment Fulfilled

The introduction of the UCC is a major commitment made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during the 2022 assembly elections, which resulted in their re-election. CM Dhami emphasized that this move is not intended to target any specific community but rather to promote equality and protect women's rights.

The UCC will enforce several critical changes, including banning polygamy, mandating marriage registration, and ensuring equal inheritance rights for sons and daughters across all religions. Additionally, it aims to eradicate social evils like child marriage and discriminatory divorce practices.

Community Engagement

Prior to the implementation, workshops were held where community representatives engaged in discussions about their rights under the new code. Legal experts clarified that the UCC seeks to establish harmony among diverse communities by providing uniform social rights.
