Maharashtra News: Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s helicopter was subjected to a check by election officials upon his arrival in Palghar on Wednesday, as part of the ongoing preparations for the Assembly elections. This move comes amid accusations from Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray, who claimed that his belongings had been similarly scrutinized during his recent visits to Yavatmal and Latur. The incident has sparked a fresh round of political debates over the conduct of the election authorities.

Controversy Over Bag Checks

In a video shared by Thackeray, the Shiv Sena (UBT) chief expressed his frustration as election officials went through his personal belongings. Thackeray questioned whether the same checks had been conducted on CM Shinde, Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, and other prominent leaders of the ruling government. Thackeray further implied that the checks were an attempt to harass opposition leaders, raising concerns about the fairness of the elections.

“Did they check the bags of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Devendra Fadnavis, and Ajit Pawar?” Thackeray asked in his video. He even went so far as to wonder if the bags of high-profile BJP leaders such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah were also inspected when they campaigned in Maharashtra.

Poll Officials Defend Their Actions

In response, the election officials defended their actions, insisting that the bag checks were carried out as part of standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure a level playing field. With the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) now in force, these surprise checks are essential to curb the distribution of illegal gifts and cash aimed at influencing voters. “The SOPs were followed to maintain fairness in the election process,” an election official remarked.

BJP Leaders Respond to Thackeray's Allegations

In a direct rebuttal, the BJP shared videos of their own leaders, such as Devendra Fadnavis, having their bags checked by airport authorities. BJP spokespersons took to social media to mock Thackeray, saying, “Some leaders have a habit of showing off.” Fadnavis himself downplayed the issue, stating, “What’s wrong with checking bags? We had our bags checked during campaigning, and there was no need for this level of frustration.”

Ajit Pawar’s Support for Fair Elections

Deputy CM Ajit Pawar also weighed in, sharing a video of his own bags being checked. He expressed full cooperation with the process and stressed the importance of upholding the integrity of the election system. "I fully cooperated and believe that such measures are essential to ensure free and fair elections," Pawar said, urging all political leaders and citizens to support these efforts.

As the election date draws near, tensions between Maharashtra's political factions continue to rise. The Maharashtra Assembly elections are scheduled for November 20, with the vote counting set for November 23. These checks, along with the political sparring, underscore the high stakes as parties prepare for what promises to be a highly contested race.
