Karnataka's financial future in jeopardy: BJP targets Congress guarantees
Karnataka faces a fiscal crisis as the BJP alleges the state is heading towards bankruptcy due to excessive borrowing and mismanagement of welfare schemes.

Karnataka is grappling with a severe financial crisis, with the BJP accusing the Congress government of pushing the state towards bankruptcy. The allegations come as Chief Minister Siddaramaiah prepares to present the state budget, with concerns over increased borrowing and mismanaged welfare schemes.
Fiscal Crisis Deepens
The BJP has criticized the Karnataka government for its financial management, alleging that the state is on the brink of bankruptcy. BJP state president B Y Vijayendra pointed out that the government struggles to pay salaries on time and faces significant outstanding debts in the transport and energy sectors. The transport department alone owes ₹7,000 crore.
Welfare Schemes Under Scrutiny
The BJP has questioned the sustainability of the five pre-poll guarantees introduced by the Congress government, including schemes like Gruha Jyothi and Shakti. These schemes, while popular, have placed a heavy burden on the state's finances. Vijayendra also highlighted the misuse of funds meant for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in previous budgets.
Call for Fiscal Responsibility
Vijayendra urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to release a white paper detailing Karnataka's financial condition before presenting the budget. He emphasized the need for fiscal prudence and economic growth, hoping that the upcoming budget will address the state's critical financial needs and stabilize its economy. The BJP's demand reflects growing concerns about Karnataka's financial stability under the current government.
