Junior Doctors and Hospital Staff Questioned in Kolkata Rape-Murder Case

In connection with the recent murder and alleged sexual assault of a second-year postgraduate student at a government hospital in Kolkata, four junior doctors from RG Kar Medical College have been summoned for questioning. This development occurred on Tuesday at the Kolkata police headquarters in Lalbazar.

Details of the Inquiry

The junior doctors, who had shared a meal with the victim prior to the incident, are not currently accused but have been called in for their potential insights. Police sources confirmed, "Four junior doctors who had dinner with her have been summoned again." Additionally, the police have also questioned the Head of Department, Assistant Superintendent, male and female nurses, Group D staff, and security personnel at the same location.

The victim's body, discovered on August 9 inside the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, was found to have been raped and murdered. This heinous act has sparked widespread outrage and protests across the city and beyond.

Widespread Protests and Political Response

In response to the tragedy, doctors and students from various hospitals nationwide have embarked on an indefinite strike, calling for justice for the victim. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has urged immediate action, stating on August 12, "The day I learned about the incident from the Kolkata Police Commissioner, I emphasized the need for swift action and a fast-track court. If the police cannot resolve this case promptly, it will be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)."

Banerjee criticized the existing security measures, noting, "There were nurses and security personnel present, yet this incident occurred. The Principal of RG Kar Hospital has resigned. The police, along with the Dog Squad, Forensic Department, and other teams, are working tirelessly to apprehend the perpetrator."

Demands for Further Action

In light of the ongoing investigation, the medical community is demanding a CBI inquiry, the establishment of a fast-track court, and the implementation of the Central Protection Act across all hospitals.
