Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren Meets Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, Prepares for Upcoming Assembly Elections
Recently, Champai Soren, a senior leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and former Chief Minister, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Ranchi on August 30. This move is seen as a significant setback for the JMM, as Champai Soren expressed his confidence in Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Amit Shah upon joining the BJP.
On Tuesday, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren met with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi. Describing the encounter as a "courtesy meet," Soren hinted at the beginning of discussions between the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and Congress regarding the upcoming Jharkhand assembly elections.
Speaking to the media after his meeting with the Congress leaders, CM Soren stated, "I had been planning to meet them for some time. It was a courtesy meeting. We will now start deliberations concerning the Jharkhand Assembly Elections. Everything is under control, and we will continue to govern effectively. Our focus is on winning the upcoming elections with full strength."
The meeting with Kharge and Gandhi follows Soren's recent visit to the Sufi saint Khwaja Gareeb Nawaz in Ajmer, Rajasthan, on Monday. The Chief Minister prayed for the prosperity and well-being of his state and the entire country. Reflecting on the visit, he said, "Once again, I had the honor of visiting Sufi saint Khwaja Gareeb Nawaz. I prayed for the well-being of the people of this state and our nation."
However, Soren's preparations for the elections have encountered challenges.
As Jharkhand gears up for the election to the 81-member Legislative Assembly later this year, the political landscape is becoming increasingly dynamic. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has yet to announce the official dates for the elections. In the 2020 Assembly election, the JMM secured 30 seats, while Congress won 16 seats. In contrast, the BJP emerged as the dominant party in the recent Lok Sabha elections, winning 8 seats, with the JMM securing 3 seats and Congress 2.
