Jailed MP Amritpal Singh Set as 2027 CM Candidate by Akali Dal (WPD)
In a surprising political move, the Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De), a splinter faction, has declared jailed MP Amritpal Singh as its chief ministerial candidate for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. Announced on April 14, 2025, the decision to rally behind the controversial figure, currently detained under the NSA, signals a bold strategy to leverage his influence among certain Sikh communities ahead of the polls.

The Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De) has ignited speculation by naming Amritpal Singh, a jailed parliamentarian and pro-Khalistan advocate, as its 2027 Punjab CM candidate on April 14, 2025.Pappalpreet Singh, a close aide of Amritpal Singh, was produced before a police court in Ajnala on Friday and sent on four-day remand.
Amritpal Singh tipped for Punjab CM
Amritpal Singh, MP from Khadoor Sahib seat of Punjab, is currently lodged in Assam jail. Meanwhile, discussions are intensifying to make him the next Chief Minister of the state. The next assembly elections in Punjab are to be held in 2027. Punjab Police had arrested him again in 2023 for attacking a police station on the outskirts of Amritsar and obtained 'transit remand' from a local court in Dibrugarh, Assam.
According to sources, the Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De) on Sunday announced Singh as its next CM candidate. The party made this announcement during the Baisakhi conference held in Talwandi Sabo. According to the report, Faridkot MP Sarabjit Singh Khalsa has appealed to party workers to campaign for Amritpal Singh for the next one and a half years.
Amritpal Singh emerges as CM face
In the Punjab Assembly elections held in the year 2022, the Aam Aadmi Party registered a historic victory and defeated the Congress by a huge margin. The party ousted the Congress from power by winning 92 seats. During that time, the Congress had won 18 seats. Whereas, Shiromani Akali Dal and Bharatiya Janata Party were contesting the elections separately. On the one hand, SAD got 3 seats. At the same time, only 1 seat came in the account of BJP.
Amritpal Singh's associate sent on remand
Pappalpreet Singh, a close aide of Amritpal Singh, was produced by the police in a court in Ajnala on Friday, from where he was sent on four-day remand. Punjab Police had reached Dibrugarh Central Jail in Assam to take Pappalpreet into custody on April 9. He was arrested on Wednesday after his one-year detention under the NSA in Dibrugarh jail ended.
Soon after his release from jail, Papalpreet was detained in the 2023 Ajnala police station attack case and brought to Amritsar.
