Viral Video: In a video put up on his social media account, social media influencer Gopal Mandal has allegedly claimed that Indian authorities treated him rudely while threatening to imprison him for exhibiting a Nepali flag while visiting the country. The video put up online quickly gained several eyeballs, widening the debate pertaining to national symbols and cultural etiquette.

Flag Controversy Near SSB Camp

In a viral social media video, Mandal recounts an incident in which he was confronted near the SSB camp at Darjeeling district, West Bengal. Mandal claims that his content creation effort to travel with the Nepali flag was met with threats of jail, considered unnecessary and controversial by many.

A video captures an interaction in which a man, not a police officer, asks Mandal why he is displaying the Nepali flag in India. The man insists that one should not display another country's flag in India without permission. From there, the argument escalates into a debate about what permission is required to travel.

Public Outrage and Online Support

Shortly, the video went viral. Some netizens started defending Mandal, while others advocated for the right to hoist flags of neighboring countries, and others condemned the act of the person in the video, claiming that tolerance and mutual respect must prevail.

A wider debate about nationalism and unity ensued

Though many appreciated the content creator for taking a stand on his own behalf, others argue that national symbols should not be used to fan unnecessary conflict. This incident has therefore led to a greater debate about the treatment of national symbols and the understanding that is required between neighboring countries.
