J-K: Omar Abdullah to be sworn in as Chief Minister on October 16 after six years of president’s rule

Jammu and Kashmir News: Omar Abdullah, leader of the National Conference (NC), is set to take the oath as the new Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir on October 16, 2024. Abdullah shared a letter from Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on social media, inviting him to form and lead the government. Sinha’s letter acknowledged Abdullah's unanimous election as the leader of the NC Legislature Party, as conveyed by his father, Dr. Farooq Abdullah, President of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference.

Sinha's letter further stated, "I shall administer the Oath of Office and Secrecy at the SKICC in Srinagar on October 16 at 11:30 a.m." He expressed his best wishes for Abdullah’s tenure and the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Omar set to rule after six years 

This key political development follows the recent revocation of President’s Rule in Jammu and Kashmir, which had been in effect for nearly six years since the abrogation of Article 370. With this, a new government is being formed in the Union Territory.

The NC-Congress alliance secured a majority in the J&K elections, with NC winning 42 seats and Congress six, out of a total of 90. Abdullah received additional support from Jammu and Kashmir Congress Chief Tariq Hameed Karra, CPI(M) Secretary G N Malik, and several independent MLAs. This will be Omar Abdullah’s second term as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, marking a pivotal moment for the region's political landscape.
