Jharkhand News: As the 2024 Jharkhand Assembly elections progress, Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) is once again highlighting tribal rights and welfare as its central agenda. However, questions linger about the effectiveness of these promises during JMM’s tenure. Despite the party’s claims of championing tribal voices, significant concerns over transparency and implementation have surfaced.

Abua Awas Yojana: Promises vs. Reality

The government’s flagship Abua Awas Yojana, launched in 2023, aimed to provide permanent housing for over 2.5 million residents, primarily from tribal communities. The plan promised three-room houses for ₹2 lakh to ensure safe, affordable housing. However, on-ground realities tell a different story.

Tribal beneficiaries have reported rampant corruption and bureaucratic hurdles, with many alleging they were forced to pay bribes to access the scheme’s benefits. Himanta Biswa Sarma, BJP’s co-in-charge for Jharkhand, criticized the scheme, stating, “The Jharkhand government’s Abua Awas Yojana has turned into a Babu Awas Yojana. Without bribes, no one can get a house.”

Corruption and Inefficiency Mar Initiatives

Reports suggest widespread mismanagement in the scheme’s implementation. While government data claims progress, transparency is lacking, and official statistics on completed houses remain unclear. Many beneficiaries have accused local officials of demanding bribes to sanction housing funds or expedite construction. This has left many tribal families disillusioned and struggling.

Administrative Negligence Sparks Outrage

The Abua Awas Yojana has been plagued by administrative delays, excessive documentation, and poor communication. Beneficiaries complain of prolonged waiting periods, lack of support, and minimal updates. Critics argue this negligence undermines the government’s commitment to tribal welfare, violating the rights of vulnerable communities.

Tribal Welfare Under Hemant Soren: Success or Failure?

Beyond housing, the Hemant Soren government has announced initiatives for land rights, education, healthcare, and employment. However, many tribal families feel neglected, alleging the government has failed to address their fundamental needs. This growing discontent is becoming a major factor in the ongoing elections.

As the elections unfold, the dissatisfaction among tribal communities could challenge JMM’s electoral prospects. Will these unresolved grievances cost the party its stronghold, or will its promises of reform win back tribal trust? The results will determine whether JMM remains a true advocate for tribal rights or falls short of its commitments.
