Is it political vendetta? Mithun Chakraborty faces FIR for ‘Masnad’ comments at BJP event in West Bengal
West Bengal News: Chakraborty’s comments came amid an event organized to mark the launch of the BJP's membership drive in West Bengal, which was also attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
West Bengal News: Actor-turned-politician Mithun Chakraborty has found himself at the center of a controversy following a provocative speech at a BJP event in Salt Lake, West Bengal, last month. The Bidhannagar Police filed a First Information Report (FIR) against him on Wednesday after a complaint was registered concerning his remarks during the October 27 speech.
The Controversial Speech and Allegations
Chakraborty, a former Bollywood actor honored with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2024, made a bold declaration that the "masnad" (throne) of West Bengal would belong to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after the 2026 Assembly elections. His statement stirred political controversy when he vowed to do whatever it took to ensure the BJP’s victory in the state.
At the event held at the Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre (EZCC), Chakraborty declared, “In 2026, the masnad will be ours, and we will do everything to achieve this goal.” His statement is now at the center of an ongoing investigation by the Bidhannagar police, who are looking into the potential incitement caused by the remarks.
TMC Allegations and BJP's Response
In his speech, Chakraborty also made pointed references to communal comments allegedly made by TMC MLA Humayun Kabir during the Lok Sabha elections. The BJP leader cautioned against any attempts to intimidate his party’s supporters in future elections, especially discouraging them from voting. He urged his party’s booth-level workers to remain vigilant and resist such attempts.
Chakraborty’s comments came amid an event organized to mark the launch of the BJP's membership drive in West Bengal, which was also attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Despite the escalating controversy, Chakraborty remained unavailable for comment.
BJP Dismisses Charges as “Vendetta Politics”
BJP state president and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar swiftly condemned the FIR, labeling it an act of "vendetta politics." Majumdar claimed that Chakraborty’s speech had been misinterpreted, insisting that the remarks were not provocative. “There is nothing provocative in his speech. These are nothing but attempts to intimidate him by using police as a political tool,” Majumdar stated, dismissing the allegations as politically motivated. The case is ongoing, and the police investigation is expected to bring more clarity to the issue.
