India - Singapore strengthen strategic ties with new collaborative initiatives
Shanmugaratnam, on a five-day visit to India, held separate talks with President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a broad focus on further expansion of the bilateral ties.
India and Singapore are charting a transformative trajectory in their bilateral relations, with intensified collaboration in critical sectors like advanced manufacturing, semiconductors, and renewable energy, Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam stated during his five-day visit to India.
In separate discussions with President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Shanmugaratnam emphasized the importance of expanding partnerships across key domains. He highlighted ongoing efforts to establish a secure data corridor between Gujarat’s GIFT City and Singapore, enabling financial institutions to exchange information on a trusted platform.
Renewable energy and sustainability initiatives
Addressing the media, Shanmugaratnam underscored the mutual commitment to sustainability, revealing discussions around creating a renewable energy corridor between the two nations. “Sustainability is a priority for both India and Singapore. We are actively exploring whether a renewable energy corridor can be achieved,” he said.
Singapore and India are also working together on next-generation industrial parks geared toward achieving net-zero emissions. Skilling initiatives for emerging industries are another area of focus, strengthening the foundation for future economic collaboration.
Historic partnership with a vision for the future
Reflecting on the enduring relationship between the two nations, Shanmugaratnam noted, “India was among the first countries to recognize Singapore’s independence in 1965. Our partnership has grown exponentially since then.”
The upcoming 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2025 will be marked by year-long celebrations. A joint logo, unveiled by President Murmu and Shanmugaratnam, symbolizes the deep friendship between the two nations. Incorporating the national flowers—the Lotus of India and the Orchid of Singapore—and the colors of their flags, the logo underscores mutual trust and shared values.
With Singapore being India’s largest investor for several years, both leaders affirmed their commitment to strengthening political, defense, economic, and cultural ties. “We are natural partners,” Shanmugaratnam remarked.
