IMD predicts heavy snowfall in Jammu-Kashmir as dense fog continues to plague national capital
New Delhi: Dense fog has severely impacted air travel in Delhi with significant flight delays and diversions as authorities issue weather warnings for ongoing adverse conditions.
New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast indicating the presence of smog and moderate fog across significant portions of the national capital, with expectations of dense fog in certain areas during the early morning hours. On Sunday, a partly cloudy sky is anticipated.
Flight Disruptions Due to Fog
On Saturday, the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi experienced considerable disruptions, resulting in 19 flight diversions, numerous cancellations, and over 400 flight delays attributed to dense fog conditions. Reports from news agency ANI highlighted the thick fog that enveloped Delhi on Sunday morning, severely impacting flight operations. Wind speeds are projected to rise to 8-10 km/h from the southeast in the afternoon but may decrease to below 6 km/h by evening.
Record Low Visibility
The weather department reported that visibility in Delhi dropped to zero for an astonishing nine-hour period on Saturday, marking the longest duration of such conditions this season. This led to significant operational challenges at the airport, with disruptions continuing for a second consecutive day.
Weather Forecast for Sunday
According to the regional meteorological center in New Delhi, the forecast for Sunday predicts smog and moderate fog at most locations, with dense fog expected in some areas during the morning. A partly cloudy sky will prevail throughout the day, with temperatures ranging between 10°C and 18°C.
Impact on Transportation
The dense fog has also affected rail travel, causing delays for 81 trains on Saturday. The IMD has indicated that a fresh Western Disturbance is set to influence Northwest India between January 10 and 12, potentially bringing light rainfall to the region on January 10.
Warnings for Jammu & Kashmir
In Jammu & Kashmir, an orange alert has been issued due to predictions of widespread snowfall and heavy snow in isolated areas. Officials have cautioned about possible temporary disruptions to both surface and air transportation as heavy snowfall is expected in higher altitudes over the coming days.
As adverse weather conditions persist, authorities are urging residents to exercise caution and minimize unnecessary travel during this period of low visibility and potential transportation disruptions.
