Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the 98th Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan, scheduled from February 21 to 23, 2025, at Delhi's Talkatora Stadium. This marks the event's return to the national capital after a 70-year hiatus; the last Delhi session was in 1954, inaugurated by then-Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

India's cultural fabric

The upcoming Sammelan holds special significance as it follows the recent designation of Marathi as a "Classical Language," underscoring its rich literary heritage. Organized by Pune-based NGO Sarhad, known for promoting cultural harmony in border regions, the event aims to celebrate and discuss Marathi literature's contributions to India's cultural fabric. Veteran politician and literary enthusiast Sharad Pawar will serve as the President of the Reception Committee, highlighting the enduring link between literature and Maharashtra's socio-political evolution. Dr. Tara Bhavalkar, an esteemed scholar and distinguished literary figure, will preside over the Sammelan, symbolizing the rich legacy of women's contributions to Marathi literature and thought.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Sahitya Nagari

The venue will be named 'Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Sahitya Nagari' in honor of the legendary Maratha ruler, reflecting the deep-rooted connection between Marathi literature and regional pride. The hall hosting the convention will be named after Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, with entry gates honoring Lokmanya Tilak and Yashwantrao Chavan, paying tribute to these prominent figures in India's history. The three-day event is expected to draw over 5,000 delegates and will feature sessions on diverse topics, including the digital evolution of Marathi literature and the preservation of folk arts. Exhibitions and performances showcasing Maharashtra's rich artistic heritage are also planned, offering attendees a comprehensive experience of the state's cultural landscape.

Marathi literature's universal themes

The return of the Sammelan to Delhi is more than a geographical shift; it is a symbolic celebration of India's unity in diversity. Delhi, as the cultural and political heart of the nation, is an ideal venue to highlight how Marathi literature's universal themes of social justice, reform, and humanism resonate across India.
This Sammelan promises to be a significant cultural event, celebrating the richness of Marathi literature and its contributions to India's diverse literary landscape.
