New Delhi: The Indian Railways has officially announced a reduction in the advance booking period for train tickets, cutting it down to 60 days from the previous 120 days. This change, which takes effect on November 1, 2024, will alter the way passengers plan their journeys. The 60-day window is exclusive of the day of departure and applies to all trains except for certain express day-time trains, which already have a shorter booking window.

New rule effective from November 2024

The reduced booking time frame will not impact passengers who have already secured their tickets prior to the rule's implementation. The move is aimed at better managing passenger flow and ticket availability for upcoming journeys. However, foreign tourists can still enjoy a 365-day advance booking period, a rule that remains unchanged.

Day-time express trains unaffected

Passengers traveling on select day-time express trains, where the advance reservation period is already shorter, will not see any changes to the current system. The new policy primarily affects long-distance and overnight trains. With nearly 30-35 crore passengers traveling on Indian trains annually, this change is expected to impact a significant number of travelers.

Tourists still enjoy extended booking period

While domestic passengers will need to adjust to the shortened booking window, foreign tourists retain the option to book train tickets up to a year in advance, making it easier for international travelers to plan their journeys across the vast Indian railway network.
