Former MLA BJP leader Satkar Kaur Gehri arrested for drug trafficking
Kaur was elected as the Congress MLA for Ferozepur Rural in 2017, but switched to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2022 after being denied a ticket by the Congress.
The Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) of the Punjab Police has apprehended former MLA and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Satkar Kaur Gehri along with her nephew for attempting to sell 100 grams of heroin in Kharar, near Sunny Enclave. Kaur, who represented the Congress as the MLA for Ferozepur Rural from 2017 until 2022, made headlines after switching to the BJP in 2022 following her denial of a Congress ticket for the upcoming elections.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sukhchain Singh Gill confirmed the arrest of Kaur's nephew, Jaskeerat Singh, a resident of Behbal Khurd village in Ferozepur. At the time of their arrest, Jaskeerat was driving the vehicle in which Kaur was present. Authorities later conducted a search of Kaur's residence, uncovering an additional 28 grams of heroin, resulting in a total seizure of 128 grams. The police also found ₹1.56 lakh in cash, gold ornaments, and various vehicle registration plates from Haryana and Delhi.
Sting Operation and Evidence
The arrests were the culmination of a sting operation initiated from credible intelligence provided by an informant, who reported having purchased drugs from Kaur. The informant provided substantial evidence, including mobile numbers and call recordings, implicating the former MLA in drug trafficking. During the sting, ANTF officers set up a decoy transaction, leading to the rapid capture of both Kaur and her nephew as they attempted to escape. One police officer sustained injuries during the operation when the suspects tried to flee in their vehicle.
Ongoing Investigation
IGP Gill stated that investigations are ongoing to explore both the backward and forward linkages in this case. The police have impounded four luxury vehicles and registered a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at the Special Task Force (STF) Police Station in SAS Nagar.
