Fix Your Own House First’: India Slams Bangladesh Over Bengal Unrest
India strongly reprimanded Bangladesh, stating that it should address the protection of minorities within its own borders before commenting on the recent violence in Murshidabad, West Bengal.

New Delhi: India has firmly dismissed Bangladesh's statement about the recent violence in West Bengal's Murshidabad district, labeling it as factually incorrect and deceptive. Bangladesh's interim government had demanded protection for Muslims affected by the violence in Bengal, but India sees this as an attempt to divert attention from the human rights issues faced by minorities within Bangladesh itself. In a strong response, Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, condemned Bangladesh’s comments and warned it to refrain from making unnecessary statements about India’s internal affairs.
Jaiswal emphasized that instead of focusing on issues in neighboring countries, Bangladesh should prioritize addressing the rights of its own minority communities. He stated, “We reject Bangladesh’s statement on the incidents in West Bengal. This statement is a response to India’s concern over the violence and abuse of minorities in Bangladesh.”
India Stresses Protection of Minorities within Bangladesh
Jaiswal further added, "Those responsible for the violence against minorities in Bangladesh roam freely. Rather than making baseless statements, Bangladesh should concentrate on safeguarding the rights and welfare of its minorities.
India Suspends Transit Facility to Bangladesh
In another development, India decided to withdraw the transit (transshipment) facility provided to Bangladesh for exporting goods to third countries. Although India did not elaborate on the exact reasons, it is understood that the move came after Bangladesh’s interim government imposed a ban on importing Indian yarn and shut down three major ports, which affected bilateral trade.
India’s Position on Trade and Regional Relations
The Indian government made it clear that it supports a democratic, inclusive, and prosperous Bangladesh, but also stated that trade issues need to be handled carefully. India had previously announced the withdrawal of the transit facility, signaling its dissatisfaction with certain steps taken by Dhaka.
India’s response not only emphasizes its commitment to its national interests but also highlights its stance on protecting its sovereignty in the face of unnecessary external interference. The country remains firm in its position that regional cooperation should be based on mutual respect and understanding.
