In a powerful appeal, Hindu spiritual leader and president of the Sanatan Nyas Foundation, Devkinandan Maharaj, has urged the United Nations to intervene in the escalating violence against the Hindu minority in Bangladesh. The violence, which has been raging since August 2024, includes attacks on temples, homes, and the brutal treatment of women and children. Maharaj has written a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, asking for immediate action to halt the relentless assaults on the Hindu community.

Bangladesh Government's Failure to Protect Minorities

Maharaj's letter highlights the failure of the Bangladesh government to protect its Hindu population from increasing attacks by radical Muslim factions. Since August, there have been numerous incidents, including the destruction of 69 Hindu temples, looting of over 200 homes and businesses, and the widespread burning of property. These events reflect a deep-rooted issue of religious intolerance and a clear failure of the Bangladeshi government to safeguard its minority communities.

Maharaj has also condemned the recent arrest of Chinmaya Krishna Das, a member of the ISKCON community, who had been vocal about the atrocities faced by Hindus in Bangladesh. Maharaj had previously led a protest march against this arrest, further underscoring the urgency of addressing the violence against Hindus.

Calls for Global Attention to the Plight of Hindus

Devkinandan Maharaj, during a Bhagwat Katha session in Varanasi, called upon the UN to ensure the safety of minorities in Bangladesh. He noted the stark contrast in global media coverage, pointing out that incidents involving Muslims in any part of the world make international headlines, while attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh go largely unnoticed. "Each incident involving the Muslim community in any country becomes a headline worldwide, but when it comes to the violence against Hindus by radical Muslim groups in Bangladesh, the world remains silent," he said.

Maharaj has also proposed the creation of a global "Sanatan Board," which would work to protect the rights of Hindus worldwide, ensuring that India plays a constitutional role in supporting the Hindu community globally.

Urging Action from the Indian Government

The Sanatan Nyas Foundation has called on the Indian government to take swift action and demand stronger measures from Bangladesh to protect its Hindu citizens. Vijay Sharma, secretary of the Foundation, announced that letters and tweets have already been sent to the UN, urging immediate intervention. "The violence in Bangladesh is not just a local issue; it's a humanitarian crisis that demands urgent international attention," Sharma added.
