Delhi: A powerful earthquake measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale shook Delhi-NCR in the early hours of Monday, forcing residents out of their homes in fear. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported that the tremors were recorded at 5:36 AM at a depth of 5 kilometers. The quake was felt across multiple regions, including Delhi, Noida, Indirapuram, and other parts of the National Capital Region (NCR). According to NCS data, the earthquake's epicenter was near Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education in Dhaula Kuan, located at a latitude of 28.59° North and longitude of 77.16° East.
Residents rushed out as fear gripped the city
The sudden and strong tremors prompted panic among locals, many of whom rushed out of their residential complexes. Some residents reported that the intensity of the quake felt unusually high for a magnitude-4 tremor. "This is the most insane earthquake I have felt in my life," wrote one social media user, while another described it as “the scariest few minutes of my life.” People at New Delhi Railway Station also experienced the tremors, with passengers comparing the shaking to an underground train passing beneath them. "Everything was shaking," a traveler told ANI. A vendor at the station mentioned that customers screamed as the quake made everything around them tremble.
Political leaders react to earthquake
Following the tremors, several political leaders took to social media to share their concerns. BJP leader Tajinder Bagga simply wrote, "Earthquake?" while Congress leader Alka Lamba posted a similar reaction. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla also confirmed the tremors on social media. Former Delhi Chief Minister and AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal expressed his concern, writing, "I pray for the safety of everyone." Caretaker CM Atishi echoed similar sentiments. Delhi Police also issued a public message, urging people to dial 112 in case of emergencies, stating, "We hope you all are safe, Delhi!"
Recurring earthquake activity in Delhi-NCR
A seismologist mentioned that the region near Dhaula Kuan, which has a lake nearby, has experienced minor earthquakes every two to three years. This has raised concerns about increasing seismic activity in the area. Last month, a powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake in Nepal sent tremors across Delhi-NCR and other northern parts of India, though no major damage was reported.
