New Delhi: In a stunning move, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced his resignation, stating that a new leader from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will take over in the next two days. The announcement has sparked speculation about Kejriwal’s potential successor, with AAP leader Atishi Marlena emerging as a strong contender for the top post.
Atishi, who has played a pivotal role in shaping AAP’s early strategies, is currently managing 11 crucial portfolios, including Finance, Education, Power, and PWD. She became a minister in March 2023 following a reshuffle after the resignations of key leaders Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain. Her increasing prominence in the party is highlighted by her appointment to hoist the national flag on Independence Day during Kejriwal's absence due to legal issues.
Aatishi in assembly elections
Atishi, who represents the Kalkaji Assembly constituency, has been at the forefront of addressing critical issues, such as the Delhi water crisis and the assault case of Swati Maliwal. Her experience and leadership have positioned her as a potential successor to Kejriwal. Responding to Kejriwal's resignation, Atishi said, “For the last two years, BJP has left no stone unturned to harass AAP... but they couldn’t prove corruption.” She also criticized the BJP for delaying elections, asserting that AAP would win all 70 seats in Delhi if the elections were held today.
Kejriwal has demanded that Delhi assembly elections, scheduled for February 2025, be moved up to November, aligning with Maharashtra and Jharkhand. However, the BJP has dismissed his resignation as a “PR stunt,” with spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari claiming Kejriwal’s popularity has waned.
