CM Pramod Sawant: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj protected most goans from forced conversions
Speaking at a government function to mark the birth anniversary of the iconic 17th century Maratha ruler at Farmagudi in Ponda tehsil, Sawant said the governance of Shivaji Maharaj and his son Sambhaji Maharaj offers lessons to modern-day governments.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has consistently highlighted the significant role of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in preserving Goa's Hindu culture during periods of forced religious conversions under Portuguese rule. In a speech on June 6, 2023, commemorating the 350th anniversary of Shivaji Maharaj's coronation, Sawant emphasized that Shivaji's interventions were pivotal in preventing further destruction of temples in the region.

He stated, "It was because of the Maratha king that the Portuguese could not further destroy temples in the coastal state." Sawant also underscored the importance of eliminating remnants of Portuguese influence in Goa, advocating for a fresh start more than six decades after the state's liberation. He remarked, "After 60 years, we should wipe out signs of the Portuguese. We need to start afresh."
Contemporary religious conversions
In addition to acknowledging historical figures, the Chief Minister has expressed a firm stance against contemporary religious conversions. He has lauded law enforcement for taking action against individuals accused of such activities, emphasizing that forced conversions will not be tolerated in Goa. Sawant has called upon the public and temple committees to remain vigilant, stating, "The government will never allow religious conversions, but even then I feel, people need to be vigilant."
Sawant's commitment
These statements reflect Sawant's commitment to preserving Goa's cultural heritage and religious harmony, drawing inspiration from historical leaders like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
