Choking in smog: Delhiites struggle as air quality deteriorates further
Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai has urged Chief Secretary Dharmendra for strict enforcement of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) to address the worsening air quality in the national capital.
Residents in Delhi continued to grapple with severe air pollution as the Air Quality Index (AQI) remained in the 'very poor' category on Sunday for the third consecutive week after Diwali. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi's overall AQI was recorded at 362 at 8 am, shrouding the city in a thick layer of smog.
Key areas such as Vivek Vihar (AQI 399), Nehru Nagar (403), ITO (317), and Chandni Chowk (349) showcased alarming pollution levels. An AQI of 301-400 is considered 'very poor,' posing significant health risks. Residents reported breathing difficulties, fever, and other health issues, urging authorities to find lasting solutions to combat the escalating pollution crisis.
Citizens Express Concern Over Daily Struggles
"We are struggling to breathe. Pollution has impacted our daily lives severely," shared a cyclist near India Gate. Another individual highlighted the need for preventive measures like reducing stubble burning and vehicle emissions. "It’s a tough time for both adults and children. Staying indoors and using masks seem to be the only immediate solutions," he said.
Many residents voiced frustration over deteriorating air quality, disrupted routines, and health issues. "Even early morning walks expose us to more pollution instead of fresh air," lamented a pedestrian.
Pollution Clouds Agra’s Taj Mahal
In Agra, the iconic Taj Mahal appeared shrouded in smog, with an AQI of 139, categorized as 'moderate.' A tourist expressed disappointment, saying, "The monument’s beauty is obscured by pollution. We hope conditions improve soon."
Supreme Court Intervenes, Calls for Action
The Supreme Court ordered the Delhi government and Police to establish checkpoints at all 113 entry points to curb truck entry into the city under GRAP Stage-IV restrictions. The court criticized the lack of compliance and directed stricter enforcement of measures.
Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai emphasized the need for a coordinated Winter Action Plan and daily reporting from departments to ensure effective implementation of pollution control measures.
