Mumbai: Tensions ran high at the Bandra court in Mumbai on Sunday as two lawyers clashed over the right to represent Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, an accused in the high-profile case involving Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan. The incident unfolded after Shehzad was arrested for allegedly sneaking into the apartment of the actor and attacking him with a knife in the wee hours of January 16.

Accused identified and presented in court

Mumbai Police on Sunday morning detained Shehzad, believed to be a Bangladeshi national, from Thane, after the third misidentification from the building's CCTV footage. He was produced before the metropolitan magistrate at Bandra in the presence of heavy police security. When asked by the court whether he had any complaints against the police, Shehzad rejected that he had any complaints against the police.

Chaos in the court over legal representation

Drama ensued when a lawyer stood up to plead Shehzad's case, but before he could get the signature of the accused on the vakalatnama, another lawyer rushed into the accused box and managed to get Shehzad's signature. This created a dispute over who should represent the case, which prompted the magistrate to intervene by advising the two lawyers to pool their efforts. After this decision, Shehzad was sent to police custody for five days.

Saif Ali Khan attack details

The chilling incident took place inside Saif Ali Khan's 12th-floor apartment at the upscale 'Satguru Sharan' building in Bandra around 2:30 am on January 16. The 54-year-old actor was reportedly stabbed multiple times by an intruder, later identified as Shehzad. Saif was rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. Doctors have confirmed that the actor is stable and expected to be discharged soon.

Background of the accused

Police said Shehzad is a resident of Jhalokathi district in Bangladesh's Barisal division. He had been living in Mumbai for the last five months, doing odd jobs, including working at a housekeeping agency. The police are now probing his motives and movements before the incident.
