In Karnataka's Bengaluru, a 33-year-old married woman who works at a catering service was allegedly gang-raped at a hotel in the Koraoorganizations The police reported that the incident occurred around midnight on Thursday after four men in their 20s approached her near Jyothi Nivas College junction and struck up a conversation. After befriending her, the men invited her to dinner at a hotel, where they allegedly made sexual advances and raped her on the hotel's terrace.

The accused also threatened her against disclosing the incident. The men released the woman around 6 a.m. on Friday, after which she informed her husband and the police. Three of the suspects, all of whom hail from another state and work in hotels, have been arrested, and efforts are underway to apprehend the fourth. A case has been registered at Koramangala police station under Section 70 (gang rape) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Assault at Bengaluru Madrasa

In an unrelated incident, police reported the physical assault of an 11-year-old girl at a madrasa in Bengaluru. The incident allegedly took place on February 16 at a madrasa in Hegde Nagar and was captured by CCTV cameras. The victim's mother stated in her complaint that her daughter, a 5th-class student at the madrasa and its hostel since July 2024, was frequently visited by Mohammad Hasan, son of the hostel in-charge. Hasan allegedly thrashed and kicked the girl for spilling rice and quarreling with other hostel girls while playing.

Broader Context of Crime in Bengaluru

These incidents contribute to the disturbing statistics and cases of rape and assault in India. A gang rape case in Delhi in January 2024 sparked nationwide protests, and a domestic violence case in Bengaluru in March 2024 highlighted the issue of marital rape. The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reported over 32,000 rape cases in 2023, with a concerningly low conviction rate of only about 30%.

Call for Action

These incidents underscore the urgent need for improved safety measures, stricter enforcement of existing laws, and greater societal awareness to address violence against women and children. The authorities are taking steps to address these issues, but a concerted effort from all sectors of society, including law enforcement, the judiciary, and community organizations, is essential.
