Assembly elections exit polls: Congress poised for power in Haryana after a decade, NC-Congress lead in J&K

New Delhi: Exit polls indicate the Congress is poised to regain power in Haryana after a decade, while its alliance with the National Conference (NC) is projected to edge out the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). The assembly elections, the first in J&K in ten years, concluded on Tuesday, while voting in Haryana took place on Saturday. The vote count is scheduled for October 8.

Breaking down the exitpollls

In Haryana, Republic TV - P Marq forecasts the Congress securing 55-62 seats, leaving the BJP with 18-24 seats. Meanwhile, Times Now projected the Congress would win 50-64 seats, and the BJP would garner 22-32 seats. The assembly in Haryana requires a majority of 46 seats to form the government.

In J&K, CVoter projects that the NC-Congress alliance will secure 40-48 seats out of 90, edging out the BJP with 27-32 seats. In the Jammu region, the BJP is expected to dominate with 27-32 seats, while the NC-Congress alliance will secure 11-15 seats. In the Kashmir region, the NC-Congress is predicted to win 29-33 seats, leaving the BJP with 0-1. Omar Abdullah, NC leader and former chief minister, dismissed the exit polls, saying, “The only numbers that matter will be revealed on the 8th of Oct. The rest is just time pass.” The elections in J&K were conducted amid a rise in terror attacks, particularly in the Jammu region, and are the first since Article 370 was revoked in 2019.
