Assam: Relief trains rushed to site after eight coaches of Lokmanya Tilak Express derails; no casualties reported

New Delhi: In a concerning railway incident, the Mumbai-bound Lokmanya Tilak Express, which departed from Agartala earlier today, derailed at Dibalong station in Assam at approximately 3:55 p.m., according to a spokesperson from the Railways. "Eight coaches, including the engine and the power car, were derailed. Fortunately, no casualties or major injuries have been reported," stated the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of the Northeast Frontier Railway zone.
Incident occurs in lumding-badarpur section
The derailment took place within the Lumding-Badarpur Hill section under the Lumding division of the Northeast Frontier Railway. This area is known for its challenging terrain, making such incidents especially concerning. Following the derailment, railway officials dispatched both the Accident Relief Train and the Accident Relief Medical Train from Lumding to the site. Senior officials from the Lumding division are supervising the rescue and restoration efforts. The priority is to clear the tracks and ensure the safety of all passengers.
Train services suspended, helplines announced
In light of the derailment, all train operations on the Lumding-Badarpur single line section have been suspended temporarily. Passengers and their families can seek assistance through the helpline numbers set up at Lumding, 03674 263120 and 03674 263126, the CPRO added. This derailment serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by the Indian Railways in maintaining safety across vast and varied terrains, especially in the hill sections.
