New Delhi: Friday, November 8, marked the conclusion of DY Chandrachud’s journey as the Chief Justice of India, a role he held since November 2022. Reflecting on his experiences and contributions, Justice Chandrachud expressed gratitude to a courtroom filled with colleagues, sharing personal reflections on his judicial path. With humility, he acknowledged any unintended hurt caused during his tenure, seeking forgiveness from those affected. He recalled the moment his registrar suggested a 2 pm ceremonial gathering, humorously wondering if anyone would be present, or if he would simply see himself on screen.

Honoring the Tradition of Judiciary

Reflecting on the legacy of the judiciary, Justice Chandrachud took a moment to appreciate the institution and the journey of becoming a judge. “We are here as pilgrims to work,” he shared, noting how the collective work of the court can determine the outcomes of lives and cases. Expressing faith in his successor, he remarked, “There will be no difference when I leave because a stable and dignified leader like Justice Khanna will take over.” His words displayed confidence in the future of the institution he served so passionately.

A Legacy of Humanity and Balance in Justice

Throughout the ceremony, senior members of the bar and bench paid heartfelt tributes to Justice Chandrachud’s impactful judicial career. His successor, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, joined Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra on the ceremonial bench, praising Chandrachud not only for his legal insights but also his humane approach to justice. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta spoke of Chandrachud’s balanced leadership, remarking, “For the government, we won some and lost many, but we knew we had a fair opportunity to make our case.”

Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, in a touching tribute, said, “You are an extraordinary son of an extraordinary father… Your ever-smiling face shall be etched in our hearts.” Sibal commended his commitment to reaching marginalized communities, praising his tenure as one that “showed what dignity means.”

Fond Memories Shared by Colleagues and Judges

In an emotional moment, Justices Hrishikesh Roy and PS Narasimha recounted their memories with Justice Chandrachud. Justice Roy, a longtime classmate, recalled how four of them had started their legal careers together, while Justice Narasimha described his privilege of both arguing before and sitting alongside Chandrachud. “It was extraordinary,” Narasimha shared.

Justice Khanna, who will soon assume the role of Chief Justice, acknowledged the legacy left by Chandrachud, saying that his path forward would be both “easy and tough.” He added with humor, “His youthfulness isn’t just known here but even abroad. In Australia, many asked about his age.”
