50% Discount on Prayagraj flights: Government acts against skyrocketing airfares
The Indian government has cut airfares by 50% for Mahakumbh Mela pilgrims, ensuring affordable travel amid soaring demand, while also addressing crowd safety concerns.
The Indian government has announced a significant reduction in airfare for travelers heading to Mahakumbh Mela 2025, with a 50% cut in ticket prices. Civil Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu confirmed the move, stating that the revised fares will be implemented starting February 1. The decision follows multiple meetings with airline operators to address the surge in ticket prices for flights to Prayagraj.
Government's intervention in airfare hike
The steep rise in airfares for Prayagraj-bound flights amid Mahakumbh prompted government intervention. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the country’s aviation regulator, had earlier directed airlines to rationalize ticket prices following a meeting with airline representatives on January 23, 2025. The discussions led to the approval of 81 additional flights to accommodate increased passenger demand, bringing the total number of flights to and from Prayagraj to 132.
Despite the airfare cut, the government has ensured that airlines will not suffer losses. According to the report, authorities have taken necessary measures to balance reduced ticket prices while maintaining financial stability for airline companies.
Soaring demand led to skyrocketing prices
The Mahakumbh Mela, which commenced on January 13 and will conclude on February 26, has drawn an overwhelming number of devotees, surpassing 199.4 million visitors so far. The increased demand for travel led to an unprecedented spike in airfares, with ticket prices for Delhi to Prayagraj flights witnessing a 21-fold increase.
The surge in visitors has necessitated large-scale infrastructure arrangements. A temporary city spanning 4,000 hectares (approximately 9,990 acres) has been established along the riverbanks to accommodate devotees. This massive setup includes 150,000 tents, supplemented by an almost equal number of toilets to cater to the needs of pilgrims.
Tragic stampede amidst massive turnout
The colossal gathering at Mahakumbh Mela has also led to unfortunate incidents. Earlier this week, a stampede at the main bathing ghats resulted in at least 30 fatalities due to overcrowding. The tragedy has raised concerns over crowd management as the event progresses.
