US embassy urges all citizens to leave Lebanon immediately
The alert advised citizens to make independent travel arrangements, ensure travel documents are in order, and maintain a charged cell phone for emergencies.
Amid escalating tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, the US Embassy in Lebanon has issued an urgent advisory for American citizens to "book any ticket available" and leave the country. The embassy emphasized the importance of preparing contingency plans for emergency situations for those who choose to stay.
Travel advisory issued
In its advisory, the US Embassy noted, "Several airlines have suspended or canceled flights, and many flights have sold out; however, commercial transportation options to leave Lebanon remain available. We encourage those who wish to depart Lebanon to book any ticket available, even if it does not depart immediately or follow their first-choice route."
Financial assistance via repatriation
The advisory also offered financial assistance through repatriation loans for US citizens lacking funds to return home. "We recommend that US citizens who choose not to depart Lebanon prepare contingency plans for emergency situations and be prepared to shelter in place for an extended period," the embassy stated.
Security advisory issued
The alert advised citizens to make independent travel arrangements, ensure travel documents are in order, and maintain a charged cell phone for emergencies. "Exercise caution, monitor the news closely for breaking developments, and factor updated information into your travel plans and activities," the advisory urged.
Potential evacuations and military deployments
Highlighting the rarity of US military-assisted evacuations, the embassy warned, "US citizens should not rely on the US government for assisted departure or evacuation in a crisis." In such scenarios, extended family and pets might not be accommodated, and evacuees would bear the cost of onward travel from a safe location.
US military actions and regional developments
The US Department of Defense has announced the deployment of additional fighter jets and Navy ships to West Asia to support Israel. This move, as stated by Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh, is in response to threats from Iran and Iranian-backed militias. The deployment aims to enhance US force protection, support Israel's defense, and ensure readiness for various contingencies.
US President Joe Biden commits to Israel's security
US President Joe Biden reaffirmed his commitment to Israel's security in a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The President discussed efforts to support Israel's defense against threats, including ballistic missiles and drones, and emphasized the importance of de-escalating regional tensions.
