World news: The United States and China are set for a critical diplomatic exchange as both nations attempt to prevent an all-out trade war. President Donald Trump recently imposed a 10% tariff on Chinese goods, citing a “national emergency” over immigration and the fentanyl crisis. Meanwhile, he has temporarily lifted tariffs on Mexico following discussions with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who pledged to reinforce border security.

Trump’s warning: Tariffs could go ‘substantially higher’

Despite ongoing tensions, Trump made it clear that China could face even harsher economic measures if it fails to curb fentanyl exports to the US. "China hopefully is going to stop sending us fentanyl, and if they're not, the tariffs are going to go substantially higher. China will be dealt with," Trump stated on Monday.

China’s response: WTO complaint and calls for diplomacy

China’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Fu Cong, strongly criticized Trump's tariffs, calling them “unwarranted” and a violation of World Trade Organization (WTO) regulations. He confirmed that China has filed a formal complaint with the WTO in response. Additionally, Fu expressed hope for diplomatic dialogue between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the upcoming UN Security Council meeting in two weeks. "I do hope that despite all the rhetoric we have heard from the American politicians, we can take a constructive and—I will emphasize—a professional approach to our work here in the United Nations. So much is at stake,"  quoted Fu.

China urges cooperation on global challenges

Beyond trade disputes, Fu emphasized the need for US-China collaboration on major global issues, including climate change, drug control, terrorism, and artificial intelligence. "If China and the US can work together, I'm sure we will be able to solve many problems and make the world a better place to live," Fu said.

US has yet to respond to China's proposal for talks

Despite China’s call for dialogue, the US State Department has remained silent on the possibility of diplomatic talks between the two superpowers at the UNSC meeting. When contacted by Reuters, officials declined to comment on China’s proposal. With tensions rising and global markets closely monitoring developments, the upcoming Security Council meeting could prove to be a decisive moment in US-China relations.
