Tariff tensions rise: Trump to impose reciprocal duties on India, other nations
Washington D.C.: U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to impose new tariffs on cars, semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, and lumber, reinforcing his aggressive trade stance to reshape global commerce in favor of America.

Washington D.C.: U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he will be imposing tariffs on several key imports, including cars, semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, and lumber. Speaking at a conference in Miami, Florida, Trump revealed that the tariff plans will be unveiled next month or even sooner. “I'm going to be announcing tariffs on cars and semiconductors and chips and pharmaceuticals, drugs and pharmaceuticals and lumber, probably and some other things over the next month or sooner,” Trump stated.
Trump’s trade policy in action
The announcement marks a continuation of Trump’s aggressive trade policies as he nears the completion of his first month in office during his second presidential term. Since his inauguration on January 20, Trump has pushed forward multiple executive orders and reinforced his commitment to tariffs, a key promise of his campaign. His administration has taken a tough stance on international trade, aiming to reshape global commerce to benefit the U.S. economy.
Targeted and broad-based tariffs
Trump’s tariff strategy includes both broad and specific measures. Reports indicate that he is considering a universal tariff on foreign-imported goods, as well as targeted tariffs on specific industries and countries. The move is intended to pressure trading partners into complying with U.S. economic policies.
Trump’s stand on trade with India
During a recent meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Trump underscored his approach to trade reciprocity. He stated that he told Modi the U.S. would impose the same tariffs on India that India imposes on American goods. Recalling their conversation, Trump said, “I said, ‘Here is what we are going to do: reciprocal. Whatever you charge, I am charging.’” While Modi objected, Trump maintained his stance, declaring, “No, no, whatever you charge, I am going to charge. I am doing that with every country.”
