Kamala Harris calls off election night speech amid Trump’s strong lead
"The vice president won't be speaking tonight, but you'll hear from her tomorrow," stated Cedric Richmond, co-chair of the Harris campaign, in Washington.
As Donald Trump gains momentum in the U.S. Presidential race, Democratic nominee Kamala Harris has canceled her election night address. Harris campaign co-chair Cedric Richmond confirmed, saying, "You won't hear from the vice president tonight, but you will hear from her tomorrow," as her team re-evaluates strategies amid Trump’s growing lead.
With pivotal wins in North Carolina and Georgia, Trump's lead has left Harris with fewer paths to secure the presidency in what is proving to be an intensely divisive election. Trump, now 78, appears positioned for a return to the White House, strengthened by the Republican Party's success in reclaiming control of the Senate, having flipped two key Democratic seats.
Harris has encountered disappointing results in strategic regions where Democrats had anticipated stronger support, leading her campaign to cancel a planned watch party in Washington, D.C. as the situation unfolds.
Trump campaign spokesperson Jason Miller described the atmosphere at Trump’s Florida base as "positive" as results increasingly favour the former president. Market responses have been swift, with the U.S. dollar appreciating and Bitcoin reaching record highs as investors factor in the growing probability of Trump’s return.
Thus far, Trump has won traditionally Republican states like Florida and Texas, accumulating 243 electoral votes compared to Harris's 194. The candidate who reaches 270 electoral votes will secure the presidency, leaving Harris with limited options as votes continue to be counted.
