Hindus are being killed
The Indian government has raised strong concerns over the alarming rise in violence against Hindus and their places of worship in Bangladesh. According to reports, since August 2024, at least 23 Hindus have been killed, and 152 incidents of temple vandalism have taken place. The issue has triggered serious diplomatic discussions between India and Bangladesh.
India’s strong diplomatic response
Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh informed the Lok Sabha that India has formally communicated its concerns to the Bangladeshi government. The matter was also highlighted during Foreign Secretary’s visit to Dhaka on December 9, 2024, where India urged Bangladesh to ensure the protection of minority communities.
76 attacks in just two months
The violence has intensified in recent months. Between November 26, 2024, and January 25, 2025, Bangladesh witnessed 76 separate attacks targeting Hindus. The trend has raised alarms within diplomatic circles, with India’s High Commission in Dhaka actively monitoring the situation.
Bangladesh’s crackdown: 70 arrests so far
Under mounting pressure, Bangladesh authorities announced the arrest of 70 people linked to 88 cases of attacks against minorities. Investigations have confirmed 1,254 incidents, highlighting the extent of the crisis. However, concerns persist over whether these measures will be enough to prevent further violence.
India’s stand: Safety of minorities is Bangladesh’s responsibility
The Indian government has reiterated that ensuring the safety and security of Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh is the responsibility of Dhaka. New Delhi continues to demand stronger action and accountability from its neighbor.
Indian nationals in Russia: 97 discharged, 12 dead
In an unrelated development, India confirmed that 12 Indian nationals serving in the Russian armed forces have lost their lives. While seven bodies have been repatriated and two were cremated in Russia as per family wishes, three cases are still under verification. Additionally, 97 Indian nationals have been discharged from service.
