Liberal Party leader Mark Carney obtained 85.9% of the votes to become the new leader while seeking to establish economic connections in the face of rising trade tensions with the United States.

Both Lloyds and South African entities benefited when Carney helped arrange access to the international bond market. His expert knowledge of private capital and currency markets became very useful for him when Russia faced the 1998 financial crisis and when global economic stability was disrupted through events such as the 2008 economic crisis. According to Carney his work at Goldman Sachs did not qualify it as the worst financial institution but positioned it as the best financial operation worldwide.

Carney progressed to central banking duties that first led him to the leadership position of Bank of Canada then onto Bank of England Governor in May 2003. As the Governor of Canada during the 2007 global financial crisis Mark Carney led the nation back to full pre-emergency GDP capacity becoming the first nation in the G7 to achieve this recovery. Following this award Mark Carney gained further reputation by winning the Central Bank Governor of the Year title in 2012.
