She then worked in pataakha (2018), which is directed by Vishal Bhardwaj. In this film she played one of the two warring sisters in a rural area setting, but this film didn't enjoy mainstream success but still she managed to instil her reputation as a performer who is willing to take risks. In the same year another film released Badhaai Ho in which Sanya starred alongside Ayushman Khurrana, this film achieved commercial and good success, despite her playing a small role

Time changing moment for Sanya
Sanya's ability to outshine in ensemble cast was further showed in many movies like Shakuntala, Devi (2020) and Ludo (2020), where she played strong roles even if it was supporting characters, she maintained her distinct presence. However, her career took a major shift when she was casted as main lead in Pagglait (2021). Playing a recently widowed woman who begins a tough journey of self-discovery, Malhotra won people's heart for her restrained and power packed performance, where she proved her ability to lead the film without any backing of any superstar.
