Elvish Yadav’s controversial remarks spark fury
During a podcast appearance, Elvish Yadav took a jibe at Chum Darang, calling her name "vulgar"and questioning her appeal. He also made an insensitive remark, suggesting that actor Karan Veer Mehra her partner must have had COVID to have "such bad taste" in liking her. His comments quickly drew outrage, with many calling them racist and derogatory. Hitting back, Chum Darang took to instagram to slam Yadav's remarks.
"Disrespecting someone's identity and name is not 'fun'. Mocking someone's achievements is not 'banter'. It’s time we draw the line between humour and hate," she wrote.Darang, known for her roles in Gangubai Kathiawadi and Badhaai Do, also expressed disappointment that her work in a Sanjay Leela Bhansali-backed film was disrespected.
Arunachal Women’s panel steps in
Following the uproar, Kenjum Pakam, chairperson of the Arunachal Pradesh Women's Commission, sent a formal letter to NCW chief Vijaya Kishore Rahatkar, condemning Yadav’s remarks."His comment not only insults Ms. Darang but the entire women society of Northeast India. Such behaviour creates fear and intimidation among Northeastern women pursuing dreams in Bollywood," she wrote, demanding strict action.
As the controversy snowballed, Yadav attempted to clarify his remarks in a video, but it only fueled further criticism."People are so foolish. I meant Karan Veer might have had COVID and lost his sense of taste and smell, which is why he likes Chum," he said, dismissing accusations of racism. His response did little to douse the flames, with many accusing him of further disrespecting Darang instead of issuing a genuine apology.
A Repeat offender?
This isn’t the first time Yadav has landed in trouble. He previously sparked outrage with comments about influencers Kusha Kapila and Arjun Bijlani. Last year, he was arrested for allegedly using poisonous snakes in videos and hosting rave parties with snake venom and drugs though he secured bail soon after.
The controversy has reignited discussions on casual racism and misogyny in the entertainment industry, especially toward Northeastern artists. With the Arunachal Pradesh Women's Commission pushing for action, all eyes are now on the NCW’s response.
